Situated 37 miles southeast of Kahului, more or less in the center of the island, and reached by way of Haleakala Hwy. (37) southeast from Kahului to Pukalani (7 miles), then Hwy. 377 directly south another 6 miles, from where Haleakala Crater Rd. (Hwy. 378) goes off eastward, 12 miles, to the park; (808) 572-4400/visitor center (808) 572-4461/weather hotline (808) 877-5111. 30,183-acre park, which has in it the 10,023-foot Mt. Haleakala, the largest dormant volcano in the world, with a crater that is 3,000 feet deep, 7½ miles long and 2½ miles wide. Offers good hiking possibilities, including a trail that loops through the crater; also picnicking, camping and horseback riding. There is also a Visitors Center at the park, with exhibits and information on the geology and eruption history of Haleakala.
